Habitats and Territories

چکیده
The time of greatest sensitivity to radiation is during the period of organogenesis in the first twelve weeks of human foetal development. Irradiation of the adult can cause life shortening or increased incidence of leukemia. The last chapter is concerned with the basis and origin of radiation protection standards, the hazards of nuclear power plants, high altitude supersonic aerospace travel, civil defense, and finally medical irradiation and public health. Written as a series of four lectures, this book will be useful for instruction and as a reference book for physicians. It can be recommended as a straightforward text in which the important aspects of the subject are picked out of a vast literature and presented in an informative way.

Hydrophobic Matching of Short Gramicidins with Phospholipids
Given the highly stochastic nature of larval supply, coral reef fish may often settle in sub-optimal habitats with limited prey. This study examines the foraging and territorial habits of a cora/feeding butterfiyfish, Chaetodon baronessa, living in two contrasting habitats with markedly different coral prey. In exposed front reef habitats, where coral prey was highly abundant, C. baronessa was ...
متن کاملPrey Availability Affects Territory Size, but Not Territorial Display Behavior, in Green Anole Lizards
The availability of food resources can affect the size and shape of territories, as well as the behaviors used to defend territories, in a variety of animal taxa. However, individuals within a population may respond differently to variation in food availability if the benefits of territoriality vary among those individuals. For example, benefits to territoriality may differ for animals of diffe...
متن کاملDemographic and behavioral comparisons of suburban and rural American Crows
American Crows (Corvus brachyrhynchos) have become common suburban and urban birds in the last 50 years, using these environments for roosting and breeding. I studied crows in upstate New York from 1989 to 1999, and compared reproductive success, survival, and social behavior of crows in suburban and rural areas. Although both suburban and rural crows maintained permanent territories, suburban ...
متن کاملNonideal breeding habitat selection: a mismatch between preference and fitness.
The selection of breeding sites in heterogeneous habitats should ideally be based on cues closely reflecting habitat quality and thus predicting realized individual fitness. Using long-term population data and data on territory establishment of male Northern Wheatears (Oenanthe oenanthe), we examined whether territory characteristics linked to individual fitness (reproductive performance and su...
متن کاملTrophic Niche in a Raptor Species: The Relationship between Diet Diversity, Habitat Diversity and Territory Quality
Recent research reports that many populations of species showing a wide trophic niche (generalists) are made up of both generalist individuals and individuals with a narrow trophic niche (specialists), suggesting trophic specializations at an individual level. If true, foraging strategies should be associated with individual quality and fitness. Optimal foraging theory predicts that individuals...
متن کاملNonmotorized Recreation and Motorized Recreation in Shrub-Steppe Habitats Affects Behavior and Reproduction of Golden Eagles (<em>Aquila Chrysaetos</em>)
Different forms of outdoor recreation have different spatiotemporal activity patterns that may have interactive or cumulative effects on wildlife through human disturbance, physical habitat change, or both. In western North America, shrubsteppe habitats near urban areas are popular sites for motorized recreation and nonmotorized recreation and can provide important habitat for protected species...
